A Hard Offer To Turn Down

Chyna sat down by the window of the Starbuck's. She had just ordered a large french vanilla cappicino and was waiting for the reporter she had called to meet with her.

Hailey walked into Starbucks and looked around for Chyna Sparks. She was nervous about the interview. She saw Chyna sitting by a window and walked over to her.
"Chyna Sparks?" She asked her.

"Hmm" Chyna had been lost in her own thoughts. "yes yes. Please sit down."

"I'm Hailey Egan. We spoken on the phone about the job." Hailey replied sitting down. "I was shocked that you called. I wasn't expecting it."

Chyna smiled coyly. Just as she had thought. Hailey seemed to be just the person she needed.

"I understand you have met Dejavu." Chyna said sipping her coffee delicately. She always presented herself to be of a higher class.

"I have. We met by chance." Hailey replied.

"and she likes you right?" Chyna had seen the writer talking to the singer before and wondered if she trusted Hailey enough to let her close enough to get some real information about her. Chyna was disqusted by the mystery that surrounded the star, even though it was her mystery that made her sky rocket to the top of the charts.

"I would say so. We talk a good bit." Hailey knew Chyna was the editor for a tabloid magazine but she was the only one who had called her in the last week and Hailey needed the job.

"Well then you might just be the girl for the job." Chyna gave her her satisfied look, yet you could see a deceptive almost demonic look in her eyes.

"Are you offering me one? I warn you I do write for other magazines or newspapers if they ask me too. I like to write a variety of work. I hope that won't be a problem. I promise you I'm an excellent writer and will do my best on any assignment you give me." She wanted her to know that she wasn't going to give up writing for the other magazines. She was one of the most requested freelance writers but it had been a week since her last article.

"no." Chyna said in her normal serious tone. "you won't be offered a contract with Extreme Heat." she paused just long enough to drink in Hailey's shocked look. Satisfaction. Chyna knew that Hailey was the type who loved the gratification of turning down contracts. But Chyna wouldn't give her the satisfaction.

"So, it will be just by assignment? I can do that. It means I can accept only the assignments I wish. That is even better. It means what I write is mine and I don't have to turn in what I might not feel is my best work." Hailey knew Chyna wasn't going to offer her a contract and that pleased Hailey because she would have more control over what went into her articles.

Chyna nodded. "you will be paid well...." she said. "if you can get what the magazine is looking for."

"I'm sure I can, provided I feel the assignment is worth it." Hailey smiled at Chyna.

"I got a grand that says you can get me information on Matt Hardy and Dejavu. If you can get proof that they are in fact dating, it's yours."

"A grand to give you proof they are dating? Hmm, three and I'll see what I can do."

Chyna peirced her lips togehter. She ran her teeth across her teeth. Hailey was tougher than she looked.

"Two." she said raising her eyebrow as she negotiated with the writer.

"Three is the lowest I'll take." Hailey wasn't going to give information for less than three. She knew if Chyna wanted the information badly enough. She would pay whatever it took. She wasn't as stupid as Chyna seemed to believe she was.

"well." Chyna said standing up and shaking Hailey's hand quickly. "Good luck with the job hunt." Chyna knew she could'nt pay that amount without having to do some big time explaining to the owner of the magazine not to mention she wouldn't pay it for information she could get herself. she would just have to find another way of getting on the inside. She began to walk off thinking of who else she could contact that was close enough to Dejavu to get her the information she needed. the singer's reclusive ways irritated her.

"I'm sure I will do fine. If you change your mind, you know where to reach. Good luck to you also." Hailey knew Chyna needed her and she would eventually come up with the money. No one else could get as close as Hailey could to Dejavu.
