Wondering What If

"Good luck.." Elle said. "...you'll need all you can get..." Elle continued after John left the room. She was really hoping to anyone that was up there that her kitchen and most importantly, her house, wouldn't be destroyed. John could barbecue, but the cooking, that was left to her.

"I can take her." Randy said, getting up from his chair and grabbing Kayla. He carried her over to the living room and sat down on the couch, setting her down on the ground.

After standing there for a good five minutes John still had no idea what to do until an idea popped into his head. He walked into his office then grabbed his laptop and carried it into the kitchen. John put it on the counter close to him then started looking up how to make scrabbled eggs. The rest of what he wanted to make were on all the packages/boxes on the foods and within twenty minutes it was all done. Nothing burned and hopefully it tasted good. John stood back then looked at the plates of food on the tray he was going to carry up to Elle, he was actually proud of himself. He then turned and grinned.

"That was easier than I thought." John thought as he threw the towel he had in his hand onto the stove.

It didn't occur to John yet though that he had forgotten to turn off the burner.

"Okay." Courtney said with a smile as she grabbed the dishes and walked to the sink.

Kayla grinned as she started to play with one of her toys. She put one of the balls she had on the slide and watched it go down then laughed when it popped back up through the top of the toy. After grabbing the ball Kayla stood up and went over to Randy then held it up to him and pulled on his pant leg, wanting him to play with her.

Elle had taken the time since John was downstairs to get freshened up. She took a quick shower and brushed her teeth. Not wanting to really get dressed up for her appointment, she put on some sweats and v-neck shirt. A far stretch from what she usually wore and when she was all dolled up, but pregnancy took a lot of her and looking like she usually does took far too much effort than what she had to give. She walked back over and got onto the bed, using the headboard as support as she turned on the t.v to watch it as she waited.

Randy had turned on the television, deciding to catch up on the local news. He had just set down the remote when he felt the tug on his pants. He looked down at Kayla and took the ball from her, sitting down on the floor and handing it back to her

John grabbed some juice from the fridge and a couple of glasses then turned around to see the towel burst into flames.

"Holy shit."

He immediately dropped what he had in his hands and ran to the sink. John paused for a moment to think about what to do and looked back at the fire before looking at the sink again. After a few moments he grabbed the spray nozzle and pulled it out then started spraying the stove. Within ten minutes the fire was finally out and John let out a sigh of relief. This would happen when he tries to make breakfast.

Kayla took the ball and put it back on the slide then laughed again when it popped up in the air. She gasped when she saw the ball land on Randy's head then got up and went over to Randy.

"Daddy boo boo?" Kayla asked with a pout.

Elle quickly rose up hearing the glass fall from downstairs. "Oh God John...what did you do..." She sighed, managing to get out of the bed. She was very grateful she wasn't at that stage of her pregnancy where she was waddling. Elle headed downstairs and her eyes widened some catching a whiff of the lingering smoke.

"John!" Elle shouted before she walked into the kitchen, stopping right at the entrance as she looked over the view in front of her. She let out a small sigh, her eyes fluttering open to see John with the nozzle in his hand. "....what did you do? You okay?" She asked.

Randy blinked some as the ball bounced off his head. He wasn't hurt, but it was more out of surprise that it had happened. He looked at Kayla before turning around some to reach back and get the ball. "It's fine. Daddy's alright." He said.

John heard Elle's voice and immediately spun around before running to the stove to attempt to cover the fact that he had burned it. He stood in front of it and hid the nozzle behind his back, probably not the best way to hide something and make it more obvious he had done something wrong but...he really felt like an idiot right now.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Go back upstairs, I'll be up there in a second." John said quickly.

Kayla smiled before she looked up at Courtney when she walked into the living room.

"Kayla you want to go play outside?" Courtney asked.

Kayla giggled and clapped her hands, excited over the idea.

Elle fought the urge to facepalm as she watched John try to cover up what happened. He acted like it wasn't the most obvious thing in the world what had just occurred.

"Nothing happened, hm? Then why does it smell like smoke?" Elle asked.

Randy stood up and straightened out his jeans. "Guess we're going outside." He said, staying behind Kayla to follow behind her when she began to walk.

John pretended to look around confused when Elle said she smelled smoke.

"Smoke? I don't spell anything. I think the pregnancy has you spelling things babe, go upstairs. Everything is fine down here." John said with a grin.

Courtney opened the closet in the hallway to grab Kayla a jacket since it was chilly. She grabbed Kayla's favorite pink one then walked over to the little girl and helped her put it on. After getting Kayla's shoes on her feet Courtney looked at her.

"Hm...you probably need a hat too." Courtney said as she started digging through the closet to find the bag where she kept all the hats and gloves.

Kayla got impatient then walked to the front door and leaned against it with a groan.

Elle looked at John and rolled her eyes. "I can't even...nevermind..." She said, turning on her heel to head back upstairs. She didn't even feel like attempting to get John to admit what had happened.

"Court, she'd bundled up enough, she'll be fine. It's not snowing outside, it's just a little cold." Randy said.

John sighed then put the nozzle back in the sink and looked at the tray of food. At least they could still eat, nothing was ruined from the mess the fire had caused. He took the tray then walked towards the stairs and up to the bedroom. Once inside the room he looked at Elle and held up the tray, grinning sheepishly.

"We still have food...if you want to eat." John said.

Courtney looked at Randy then nodded as she stood up and closed the closet door, giving up on her search for the hat. She put on her own jacket before she walked over to Kayla and took her hand.

"Excited sweetie?" Courtney asked with a chuckle as she watched Kayla jump as they walked out the door.

Elle looked up when John got into the room with the tray. She gave him a sympathetic look when he walked over. She knew he had made an effort and that's what mattered.

"Of course. Want to share it?" Elle asked, leaning over to kiss his cheek. "And thank you for breakfast, I appreciate it."

Randy grabbed his jacket and slipped it on, following behind his two girls. He held open the door that lead them outside and they all went to the backyard.

"What do you want to do first, Kay?" Randy asked.

John put the tray down on the bed so it would be in between them both. He then sat down on the other side of the bed and nodded with a smile. Of course he'd want to share, it was John after all. When did he turn down food?

"Yes definitely and you're welcome. I'm glad I didn't burn down the whole kitchen." John said, chuckling slightly.

Kayla looked at the playground that Randy and Courtney had built in the backyard then started thinking.

"Um...slide." Kayla said.

Courtney nodded then picked Kayla up and walked over to the stairs of the slide then put her up on the platform the slide was connected to. She watched carefully as Kayla walked over to the slide and sat down at the top of it.

"It's very appreciated that you didn't burn down the entire kitchen. Thank you." Elle said with a nod as she picked up her food. She wasn't too sure how good this would taste, so took a small bite and ate it. "Hm, it's not that bad, babe."

Randy walked over to the end of the slide, ready for Kayla when she finally slid down it.

"Ready, Kayla?" Randy asked, kneeling down as well as he waited for her.

It was probably bad of him to let Elle be the taste tester since she was the pregnant one but at least the food wasn't terrible. He was happy about that, it could have been worse. John took some food and ate it as well. Wasn't bad but he definitely needed more practice before he could call himself a master chef.

"Sorry it's not the perfect meal you were expecting." John said.

Kayla nodded with a smile as she slide down the slide with her arms up, expecting to be picked up when she made it to the bottom.

Elle shook her head at John, taking another bite of the food to prove to him that it wasn't as bad as he thought it was. It wasn't great enough for her to ask him to do this all of the time, but it wasn't as terrible as he may have thought it was or could've been. Really, it was the thought and effort that counted, and that meant more to Elle than anything.

"John, it is perfect. It's perfect cause you made it for made and put the effort into doing so." Elle sincerely said with a smile.

Randy waited patiently at the end of the slide for Kayla. When she slid down it, he caught her with perfect timing, effortlessly picking her up and standing to his full height once he had her in his arms. "Want to go again or go on something else?" Randy asked, walking over to Courtney.

John couldn't help but smile when he listened to what Elle had to say. She was so sweet and always looked out for others feeling. She always seemed to know just the right thing to say to make someone feel good about themselves. He put an arm over her shoulders then moved closer and kissed her on the cheek.

"I'm glad you like it." John said.

"Again! Again!" Kayla exclaimed, looking up at Randy with a wide smile.

"Whatever she wants." Courtney said with a chuckle as she looked at Kayla.

Elle smiled, feeling John's lips on her cheek and leaned into him a little as his arm went around her shoulders.

"Thank you for breakfast." Elle said.

"Okay." Randy said, handing Kayla over to Courtney so that she can get settled on top of the slide. "We're doing this again." Randy walked off back towards the end of the slide and waited for Kayla.

"You're welcome, I'll do anything for you while I'm home. Whatever you want or need just let me know." John said.

Courtney set Kayla up on the platform then watched as she sat down at the top of the slide and went down it again.

"You don't have to do much, babe. Really, you're not home much, you should at least rest." Elle said.

Randy grabbed Kayla when she slid down, spinning her around before setting her back down to go back over to her mother.

"I can rest when you're sleeping. You're the one pregnant with our child, the least I can do is help around the house and help you with anything you need. Being pregnant isn't easy and I don't want you dealing with a lot of crap at this time." John said.

Kayla giggled loudly when Randy spinned her around then ran over to Courtney when she was set on the ground.

"Was that fun honey?" Courtney asked as she picked Kayla up.

"Yes. A lot of fun." Kayla said with a bright smile.

"But you're on the road all of the time, seriously. I am fine right now, there is no need to worry about me." Elle said.

"What do you want to do next? The swings?" Randy offered.

John sighed, reluctantly starting to give in.

"I worry about you regardless of the fact that you tell me not to. You're my girlfriend and the other mother of my child, what kind of man would I be if I didn't?" John asked.

"Yes! I want to go really high." Kayla said.

"Okay, you want mommy or daddy to push you?" Courtney asked as she started walking towards the swings.

"Both."

"Babe, when the time comes, I won't fight you on it. But right now...I am okay, honestly. I just get a little sick and tired, but it's nothing that I can't handle." Elle said, patting his thigh gently and giving him a smile.

"I think we can manage that." Randy said, walking with them over to the swings. When they got there, he picked up Kayla and carefully set her on the seat.

John looked at Elle as he started to calm down a bit more and nodded. She was right, maybe he was taking worrying to being paranoid. If she said she was fine she probably was and he had to trust that.

"Okay fine. I'll hold back a little bit and won't be breathing down your back waiting to do something for you." John said with a small chuckle.

"Daddy will go first then mommy will switch after a few minutes." Courtney said as she stood to the side and took her camera out.

"Okay." Kayla said as she waited for Randy to start pushing her.

"Thank you, it's appreciated. I love you for caring though, I really do." Elle grinned, grabbing a piece of toast and taking a bite out of it. "Now go get ready, we have an appointment today, I don't think you'd like to be late for, considering you're going to figure out what your child would be and would see him or her for the first time."

Randy nodded, figuring Kayla's suggestion was easy enough. He got behind her and gently began to push her on the swings, watching her get higher and higher with his help
